MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY's financial woes may endanger the future of its noncommercial Jazz WMOT (JAZZ 89.5)/MURFREESBORO-NASHVILLE. The TENNESSEAN reports that the school faces the need to cut as much as $19 million from its budget, and WMOT accounts for over $400,000 in expenses each year. MTSU is considering the options of closing or selling the station, and fans have reacted with letters, calls, and e-mails protesting the possible shutdown or sale.
MTSU President SIDNEY MCPHEE told the paper, "At this point, I'm not in a position to put anyone's mind at ease. I will say this. I have listened, and I have read, and I have heard the feedback." Among the fundraising events held by supporters of the station was a concert SUNDAY and two on-campus fundraisers that raised $7,000.
