Syndicator RADIO AMERICA Pres. JAMES ROBERTS has announced the formation of the FREE RADIO COALITION to fight the possible reimposition of the "Fairness Doctrine." ROGER HEDGECOCK, whose show is syndicated by RADIO AMERICA, will chair the coalition.
HEDGECOCK said, "The reinstatement of the misnamed Fairness Doctrine would constitute a massive assault on our cherished First Amendment rights and should be of concern to all Americans regardless of their political or religious persuasion. This coalition will provide a bulwark for defending those freedoms and I hope broadcasters all across the philosophical spectrum will support it."
The stated goals of the organization are "to educate the public about the dangers posed to freedom of the press and freedom of speech by the Fairness Doctrine and by the imposition of a local content requirement; to help coordinate a summit conference of radio talk show hosts and religious broadcasters in WASHINGTON to plan a strategy for the coalition; to organize expert testimony in the event that the FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION or Congressional committees hold hearings on the Fairness Doctrine; (and) to urge the public to communicate their opposition to the Fairness Doctrine to their Senators, Congressmen and the FCC."
