Bid To Reduce Canadian Artist Development Contribution Fails

The CRTC has shot down an attempt by DIFFUSION LAVAL INC. French Oldies CFAV-A (RADIO BOOMER)/LAVAL-MONTREAL to eliminate the condition of its license requiring the station to contribute C$8,000 a year to the promotion of Canadian artists and replace it with the new "Canadian content development" scheme based on total revenues. The station claims it is losing money and sought to pay $500 for the fiscal year ending AUGUST 31st, 2009.
The CRTC rejected the request, noting that the $8,000 commitment was a key to the grant of the station's original license in 2003 and that the present owner bought the station knowing of the requirement.
