While the "Fairness Doctrine" has gottan a lot of attention, localism is getting another boost with the introduction WEDNESDAY of the "Local Community Radio Act of 2009" by Reps. MIKE DOYLE (D-PA) and LEE TERRY (R-NE), a bill that seeks to expand the number of low power FM stations nationwide. House Commerce Committee chairman HENRY WAXMAN and former presidential candidate RON PAUL (R-TX) are among the bill's co-sponsors. The bill would eliminate third-adjacent-channel interference consideration for LPFM applications, possibly opening the door to more low power community stations.
A similar bill failed to pass Congress last year, while the Senate is likely to consider a bill regarding LPFM in the SPRING.
