Exclusive Analysis Of N.Y.'s New Top 40 Landscape
March 13, 2009 at 7:43 AM (PT)
The rumors had circulated before and after the CBS flip of Talk KLSX to 97.1 AMP RADIO in LOS ANGELES. NEW YORK was next. Industry speculation turned into reality on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11th at 5p (EDT) when longtime Rock outlet WXRK (K-ROCK) was changed to Top 40 as 92.3 NOW FM.
Following the first 24 hours on the air, we take the first look at exactly what music position 92.3 NOW is taking in the now heavily Rhythmic NEW YORK market. This analysis, compiled by MUSICRUNCH's ANTHONY ACAMPORA and KEVIN McCABE is of the first 24 hours of WXRK/NEW YORK after its flip to Top 40 on WEDNESDAY, with data provided by MEDIABASE.
The NEW YORK outlets included in this analysis are CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHTZ (Z100), CBS Top 40 WXRK (92.3 NOW), CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR (POWER 105.1) and EMMIS Top 40/Rhythmic WQHT (HOT 97). Keep in mind that 92.3 NOW FM is playing a heavier volume of music -- as it is plowing through 10,000 songs commercial-free (as CBS sister 97.1 AMP RADIO in LOS ANGELES is doing). Rotations will, of course, change when commercials begin airing.
CITADEL Hot AC WPLJ, CBS AC WWFS and CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WKTU -- which generally target a slightly older demographic -- are not included in this report, although they will clearly share some audience and music with WXRK. WWPR is included as part of this analysis.
92.3 NOW FM launched with a very tight playlist -- just 60 songs for the first 24 hours. CBS has launched in NEW YORK with a decidedly Rhythmic lean, positioned between Z100 and HOT 97, and perhaps to a lesser extent, WKTU.
Six power rotation songs spinning approximately every 70 minutes. (First 24 hours of 92.3 NOW FM). The first is the number of spins on:
Spins % Spins
LADY GAGA/Just Dance 23 74%
KANYE WEST/Heartless 22 67%
T.I./Dead And Gone 21 43%
FLO RIDA/Right Round 21 57%
BRITNEY SPEARS/Circus 21 62%
ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS/Gives You Hell 20 77%
Three songs off the BRITNEY SPEARS release totaled 44 spins in 24 hours -- 1.83 songs per hour -- showing how strong this effort is.
T.I. "Dead And Gone," which is the #1 Rhythmic song in AMERICA, recently moved up on Z100, but is just 7x per day at HOT 97 and 6x per day at POWER 105. 92.3 NOW FM has the largest share of spins after one day. This is very telling.
Here are the major currents/hot recurrents that each station owns:
AKON/Right Now (Na Na Na) 14
FRAY/You Found Me 9
KELLY CLARKSON/My Life Would Suck 9
TAYLOR SWIFT/Love Story 8
JESSE MCCARTNEY/How Do You Sleep? 7
SECONDHAND SERENADE/Fall For You 7
MILEY CYRUS/The Climb 6
LEONA LEWIS/Better In Time 4
WHITE TIE AFFAIR/Candle (Sick And Tired) 3
Lots of pundits already questioning whether or not Z100 stays the course with pop/rock titles such as THE FRAY, TAYLOR SWIFT and SECONDHAND SERENADE. Of course, we know that vast areas of the NEW YORK metro are non-ethnic, so conventional wisdom would say yes -- it is strategically sound for Z100 to continue to embrace these titles. We will watch this carefully.
