In the wake of WHITE HOUSE Press Secretary ROBERT GIBBS’ comment that he didn’t own a radio, ABC NEWS RADIO VP/GM STEVE JONES met with GIBBS TUESDAY evening to discuss radio’s broad reach.
The meeting came about after JONES sent GIBBS a radio, delivered by WHITE HOUSE Correspondent ANN COMPTON, as a response to the comment. JONES’ gift came with a note that invited GIBBS to "join the 235-million people weekly that listen to the radio, according to the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS," and noted that 74 million listen to ABC NEWS RADIO programming. The note suggested a meeting to discuss radio’s power, an invitation that GIBBS accepted.
JONES said that he shared data with GIBBS that showed radio’s daytime reach exceeding that of broadcast TV and cable TV by 20%. "I showed Mr. GIBBS a breakdown of audience demonstrating radio’s daytime advantage over TV, Internet, Magazines and Newspapers," said JONES.
GIBBS said, "Instinctually, I knew this but to see the actual data was impressive. Radio’s reach, especially considering the efforts necessary to achieve that reach, is very interesting."
