The FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau has opened for public comment a petition from the AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY, DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE, and NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY asking the Commission to expedite its introduction of new rules to protect migratory birds against tower strikes. Comments on the petition (WT Docket 08-61 and 03-187) are due MAY 29th, with replies due JUNE 15th.
The AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY has also been active in encouraging the FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION's pending study of tower lighting. The FAA is looking into the possibility of banning steady-burning lighting sidemounted on tall towers in favor of white strobe lighting that might not attract the birds the way the standard red lights do.
