FCC Finally Releases Order Extending Fox N.Y.Cross-Ownership Waivers

The FCC finally released the order from JANUARY 2008 rejecting the UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST and RAINBOW/PUSH COALITION's challenge to the newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership waivers held by RUPERT MURDOCH and FOX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP for the NEW YORK POST, FOX O&O WNYW (TV) (FOX 5), and MY NETWORK TV affiliate WWOR-TV (MY 9)/NEW YORK. The objections of Acting Chairman MICHAEL COPPS and Commissioner JONATHAN ADELSTEIN, originally written in 2006, were never previously released until FRIDAY (5/22).
The waivers were granted to help preserve the POST's viability; COPPS and ADELSTEIN objected on the basis that the Commission should have more seriously investigated the need for the waivers, with ADELSTEIN also complaining that WWOR, the only commercial VHF full-power station licensed to NEW JERSEY (SECAUCUS), has never been held to the strict public-interest obligations established when the FCC allowed RKO GENERAL to keep and sell the license by moving it to NEW JERSEY rather than having the license revoked.
