U.K. cable provider VIRGIN MEDIA INC. will launch an unlimited music download service in partnership with UNIVERSAL MUSIC in a bid to tackle online music piracy, reports THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. "The NASDAQ-listed company, which operates solely in the U.K., said the service is expected to launch by CHRISTMAS and it is in discussions with the other major and independent music labels and publishers to add their music to the unlimited offer.
"The service will enable VIRGIN MEDIA broadband customers to both stream and download as many music tracks and albums as they want from UNIVERSAL MUSIC's catalogue, in return for a monthly subscription fee understood to be between 10 and 15 Pounds.
"The service is the latest step to finding a solution to online music piracy and follows similar unlimited music offers from the mobile operators like NOKIA CORP. and SONY ERICSSON.
"It comes a day before the U.K. government will set out its Digital Britain framework which could impel internet service providers like VIRGIN MEDIA and BT PLC to slow down connection speeds of people who are suspected of illegally sharing copyrighted material."
