KTEX's Jo Jo Plays Columbo, Solves Concert Scam

Would it sound a touch fishy if a supposed concert promoter met with you and offered your station a chance to be involved with a GARTH BROOKS/SHANIA TWAIN reunion show in your market? Well, it did to CLEAR CHANNEL Country McALLEN-BROWNSVILLE, TX PD JO JO CERDA.
The fishy promoters, a group calling itself EMPIRE MEDIA GROUP, is supposedly based in HOUSTON. A representative from the outfit met with JO JO and city of BROWNSVILLE officials, proposing the GARTH/SHANIA show at a local park. When they got to the part about bringing in bleachers, JO JO's antennas were piqued thinking ... SHANIA and GARTH working with bleachers? The group didn't stop there, even proposing another show with TAYLOR SWIFT.
The scam lies in getting upfront deposits, which JO JO thinks are then stashed away overseas. Of course, the concert never happens. After some nifty detective work, JO JO saved the city a bunch of money and headaches when he surmised that the whole operation was bogus. Sadly, the city of BROWNSVILLE already anteed up $7,000 for an alleged BOYS II MEN concert that was supposed to happen this week. Concidentally, BOYS II MEN is actually playing a show this weekend in nearby DUBLIN, OHIO for a JULY 4th celebration. Details here.
If the EMPIRE MEDIA GROUP has already come knockin on your door, better get the scoop from JO JO first at JoJoCerda@clearchannel.com.
