Senate Panel Meets Clyburn, Baker
July 16, 2009 at 5:09 AM (PT)
MIGNON CLYBURN and MEREDITH ATTWELL BAKER faced the Senate Commerce Committee WEDNESDAY and both nominees for the FCC stressed their support of policies that foster competition.
Both Democrat CLYBURN and Republican BAKER voiced their opposition to a reinstatement of the "Fairness Doctrine" and said that they were wary of broadcast ownership concentration, and discussed their backing of expanding the availablility of broadband.
Both mentioned the need to allow ISPs to have "reasonable" methods to allow them to control certain material going through their networks (like pornography or pirated media), but CLYBURN said that net neutrality laws would depend on whether the market is competitive while BAKER said that the present marketplace is working.
Neither was asked about indecency enforcement.
