The BROADCASTING COMMISSION OF IRELAND has ruled that DENIS O'BRIEN's media empire does not constitute an undue share of the nation's media.
O'BRIEN owns four radio stations in IRELAND and part of a fifth, and has tried to buy FM104/DUBLIN over the BCI's objections; he has a 26% stake in INDEPENDENT NEWS AND MEDIA, which triggered the review when three of O'BRIEN's associates were placed on the board of that company. O'BRIEN has been embroiled in a battle with the O'REILLY family over the operation of INDEPENDENT NEWS, with O'BRIEN demanding the sale of two newspapers and trying to block any sale of the troubled company's INM OUTDOOR division.
