The fallout from the incident in which AUSTEREO Top 40 2DAY FM/SYDNEY morning hosts KYLE SANDILANDS and JACKIE O elicited the revelation from a 14-year-old girl that she had been raped continues with SANDILANDS' firing as a judge on "AUSTRALIAN IDOL." The TEN NETWORK announced the firing TODAY, with a statement saying, "It has become increasingly clear that as IDOL has remained a family-focused show, even more so this year with the 6:30p SUNDAY time slot, his radio persona has taken on a more controversial position over this period which is not in the interest of the show."
The incident on last WEDNESDAY's show involved a bit in which a mother had her daughter strapped into a fake polygraph while being grilled on topics like drugs, sex, and school. The 14-year-old girl was asked about sex, and she responded by saying "Oh, okay, I got raped when I was 12 years old." SANDILANDS followed up by asking the girl if the rape was "the only experience you've had." SANDILANDS and JACKIE O drew criticism from the Prime Minister of AUSTRALIA, KEVIN RUDD, who said that he and most Australians are "really distressed at the way in which the young person has been treated in this way."
