CRTC Releases '08 Communications Monitoring Report

The CRTC's second annual Communications Monitoring Report shows broadcasting revenues were up 7.3% to C$14 billion for the twelve-month period that ended on AUGUST 31, 2008. FM revenues increased 7% to C$1.251 billion in 2008; AM revenues remained flat at C$329 million. Private commercial broadcasters, 61% of audio and radio services, generated revenues of C$1.6 billion, up 5.2%.
Average weekly hours tuned per capita have fallen 2% each year since 2004, from 19.5 hours per week to 18.3 hours in 2008. The biggest declines have been in the 18-24 and 12-17 age groups, each with a 4% annual decrease. Weekly hours per listener have declined 1% annually since 2004 from 21 to 20 hours.
Canadians also spent more time listening to podcasts, with anglophone listening up 46% and francopone podcast usage up 40%.
