CLEAR CHANNEL Active Rocker WXTB (98ROCK)/TAMPA, FL celebrates 20 years as TAMPA’s Rock station. On JANUARY 1st, 1990 then WKRL 97.9 FM was launched as the first ever all LED-ZEPPELIN station, receiving worldwide press for a true “artist flip,” where a broadcaster dedicated its entire business to one artist.
“After over two weeks of media coverage, on JANUARY 18th, 1990 98ROCK hit the airwaves with AC/DC’s “HELLS BELLS” and TAMPA BAY hasn’t been the same since,” said GM DAN DILORETO, who actually made the announcement on-air of the change 20 years ago.
Since 98ROCK’s inception, the station has remained on the cutting edge of rock music; introducing bands like NIRVANA and PEARL JAM to the East Coast and breaking bands like GODSMACK, 3 DOORS DOWN, DISTURBED, STAIND and CREED. WXTB has produced legendary rock music festivals such as LIVESTOCK and 98ROCKfest, entertaining thousands of concert revelers.
“It is a great honor to continue 98ROCK’s storied tradition as we enter into our third decade”, said PD DOUBLE DOWN. “ We will be celebrating this year by thanking the most important stakeholders in the brand – our listeners!”
