LPM Stands With Haiti
January 26, 2010 at 4:45 PM (PT)
Starting TODAY, the three stations of LOUISVILLE PUBLIC MEDIA (News WFPL, Classical WUOL and Triple A WFPK) will begin fundraising on behalf of PARTNERS IN HEALTH. PIH has served the health needs of HAITI’s poor for over 20 years. The organizations new endeavor, STAND WITH HAITI, is a continuation of this support in direct response to the recent devastation of PORT-AU-PRINCE and surrounding areas.
Then on SUNDAY, JANUARY 31st, WFPK will be soliciting donations from 10a-5p on the air. The donations can be made via the web or by phone. The day will culminate with a WFPK broadcast performance by THE DICK SISTO-HARRY PICKENS DUO in the LPM Performance Studio.
This is a very unique opportunity for public broadcasting entities. The FCC has a policy prohibiting noncommercial educational stations from engaging in on-air fundraising activities on behalf of any entity other than itself, where such activities alter or suspend regular programming. However, for the second time it its history (HURRICANE KATRINA being the first), the FCC believes that, due to gravity of the damage wrought by the earthquake in HAITI, the public interest would be served.
LPM joins many public radio outlets that have taken advantage of this exception to help the people of HAITI.
