The Countdown Begins For Jonathan L
February 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM (PT)
After three decades in radio, JONATHAN L will announce this week on his two weekend shows (FEBRUARY 6th & 7th) on SANDUSKY Active Rock KUPD/PHOENIX that he is retiring. His last show on KUPD will be on APRIL 18th.
JL's radio career began almost 30 years ago with his "VIRGIN VINYL" specialty show on KLPX/TUCSON. He launched one of the first Alternative stations KEYX (THE KEY)/PHOENIX in 1986 and began the music festival circuit with KUKQ/PHOENIX's "Q-FEST" in 1989 with the RED CHILI PEPPERS, CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, and others. He has hosted two free-form shows dubbed, "THE LOPSIDED WORLD OF JONATHAN L," on SATURDAY mornings and SUNDAY evenings for the past four years on KUPD.
JONATHAN L told ALL ACCESS, "I have had a great radio career for three decades. No one, and I mean no one has had the freedom in radio musically I have been blessed with from start, and now the finish. I could say I am leaving while the getting is good, but that would be bullshit. I am leaving to retire, enjoy life, and travel the world. As a cancer survivor since 1996, I have looked forward to every day, and now I am looking forward to enjoying life the way it is meant to be. Life is short, be happy.
"To all the people I have offended over the years, I say Fick Dich. At 63 I still rock harder, stranger, and purer than anyone. Maybe I will one day again soon, in another place in another time. To all who have supported me, and there have been many, I say Ich Liebe Dich.
"Remember I never played the game, never kissed ass, and never became a pusher of alternative anything. I was simply the 'Alternative' to everything and everyone around me. My curtain call, 'THE LOPSIDED WORLD OF L' was the only show live on a SATURDAY morning in prime time in a major market the past four years. I wonder if that will ever happen again in the history of radio?
"Thanks to CHUCK ARTIGUE (GM) and LARRY MCFEELIE (PD) at 98 KUPD for allowing me once again to do what I did best, play the music I programmed with no strings attached. I also thank them for allowing me to begin the countdown by informing my listeners for the next two months they are listening to the last shows. KUPD is a class act for doing this, one last time for me on my own terms. The last shows will be APRIL 17th and 18th. Listen on the live stream.
"One more Ich Liebe Dich for all that cared. Danke."
