Former radio and TV station owner and U.S. Congressman CECIL HEFTEL died YESTERDAY in SAN DIEGO of natural causes at 85, according to the HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN.
In the 1950's, HEFTEL formed HEFTEL BROADCASTING, owning stations like KIMN-A/DENVER, KSSK-A-F and KGMB-TV/HONOLULU, WHYI (Y-100)/MIAMI-FT, LAUDERDALE, and many others. He later partnered with SCOTT GINSBURG as H&G COMMUNICATIONS, and then created another version of HEFTEL BROADCASTING in major markets that ultimately merged into CLEAR CHANNEL and TICHENOR MEDIA to create HISPANIC BROADCASTING CORP., now part of UNIVISION.
A Democrat, HEFTEL was elected to Congress from HAWAII in 1976, leaving in 1986 to run for Governor only to be upset in the primary. Most recently, he was elected to the HAWAII Board of Education in 2004.
