SNL KAGAN reports that the FCC ended 2009 with 1.45 million indecency complaints and 12,049 open indecency cases. SNL KAGAN's TIM DOYLE says that up to 7,000 of the open cases may involve political or racial content, late-night programming, violent material, or cable networks, none of which is under the FCC's purview.
FOX television is the target of the largest portion of the complaints, with one episode of "FAMILY GUY" generating 188,388 complaints. Among cable networks, CNN was the leading subject of indecency complaints. The information was obtained by SNL KAGAN through a Freedom of Information Act filing, and the report did not look at radio indecency complaints.
