In the latest chapter of a long-running saga, the board of directors at NORTHWEST COMMUNITIES EDUCATION CENTER Spanish Variety noncommercial KDNA/YAKIMA, WA have fired Exec. Dir. MARIA FERNANDEZ.
The YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC reports that FERNANDEZ was fired in a meeting held THURSDAY, with immigration attorney LAURA CONTRERAS acting as interim Exec. Dir. under a transitional arrangement with COLUMBIA LEGAL SERVICES.
FERNANDEZ' term at the helm of KDNA was marked by conflicts with staff, including protests and sit-ins complaining about firings and treatment of employees; FERNANDEZ said that the protestors were sexist and unwilling to accept changes at the station to reach more second-generation Mexican listeners.
