WPLR April Fools Gag Causes Local Outrage
April 1, 2010 at 12:47 PM (PT)
COX Rocker WPLR (99ROCK)/NEW HAVEN, CT morning team CHAZ & AJ pulled off a major APRIL FOOLS joke heard by thousands of CONNECTICUT and LONG ISLAND radio listeners. Many residents, some already angry with the new Federal health care bill, were infuriated to hear that there will be a new federal pet tax of $100 levied on cats and dogs, effective next year when town licenses are renewed.
Governor, M. JODI RELL, even joined in the gag which also resulted in angry calls to Senator JOEL LIEBERMAN’S office. Several area TV and newspaper reporters, and even well-known attorney NORMAN PATTIS helped to make the “pet tax” even more plausible by participating in the hoax.
The morning team officially pulled the plug on the joke at 8:30a today after running with it in the newscasts and with open phone lines since 5:45a. “Please be advised there is no pet tax buried in the Federal health care bill.”
