UNIVISION has confirmed to ALL ACCESS that their stations in MIAMI, SAN DIEGO, PHOENIX, SAN ANTONIO and LAS VEGAS have begun encoding their signals for ARBITRON's PPM as of 5a TODAY. No explanation for the decision was offered.
UNIVISION already encoded stations in HOUSTON, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, SAN FRANCISCO, SAN JOSE and DALLAS, but only subscribes to PPM ratings in HOUSTON, where it has been MRC accredited. It is not yet known whether UNIVISION will subscribe to PPM in the new markets.
Ironically, UNIVISION's decision to encode in MIAMI comes the same week SBS decided to stop encoding its stations in the market. Without the two radio groups, there wouldn't be ratings for approximately 30% of MIAMI.
ARBITRON has declined to comment.
