The FCC has approved the controversial sale of Classical KFUO/ST. LOUIS by the LUTHERAN CHURCH-MISSOURI SYNOD to GATEWAY CREATIVE BROADCASTING for $26 million, spelling the likely end of the Classical format on the station. GATEWAY plans to flip the station to its Contemporary Christian "JOY-FM" format upon closing,
The sale had been bitterly opposed by listener groups and civic leaders, and drew attention from Senators and Congressmen from the ST. LOUIS area. Opponents claimed that the church, through OMAHA politician/lawyer, board member and spokesman KERMIT BRASHEAR, resisted plans to sell the station to either another Lutheran organization or a citizens group dedicated to saving the station's Classical format.
