CRTC Nixes 3 Applications For New Quebec City FMs

The CRTC has rejected three applications for new FM stations in QUEBEC CITY. The rejected applications included two by EVANOV COMMUNICATIONS, one an English-language easy listening station at 105.7 FM and the other a French easy listening station at 105.3 FM, and one by MICHEL CLOUTIER for a French-language specialty (40% jazz and blues) format on 105.7 FM.
The applications drew objections from competitors ASTRAL MEDIA RADIO, COGECO, CORUS, RADIO-CLASSIQUE QUEBEC, and RNC MEDIA contending that the market could not support any additional commercial stations and that the English-language market was too small to support any commercial stations. The CRTC noted that the one commercial English-language radio entity in the market, tourist information station CJNG, has yet to turn a profit after three years.
