FCC Grants New Virginia Noncomm

The FCC has granted HAMPTON ROADS EDUCATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION, INC.'s application for a new noncommercial FM in GLOUCESTER POINT, VA over the objections of CHESAPEAKE CATHOLIC RADIO, FOUNTAIN OF MERCY, LIBERTY UNIVERSITY, EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION, PENSACOLA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, DELMARVA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE RADIO, SILVER FISH BROADCASTING, and AIRWAVES FOR JESUS, INC.
The objections arose from HRETA's initial application that failed to comply with VHF channel 6 protection requirements. HRETA later filed a consent letter from LOCAL TV CBS affiliate WTVR-TV/RICHMOND, which had its analog signal on channel 6. The FCC dismissed objections based on the original and amended applications as well as alleged defects in WTVR's consent letter, and rejected an assertion that the Commission should have chosen more than one tentative selectee from the original mutually exclusive group.
