Condolences to the family and friends of longtime radio vet STEW SCHANTZ, who passed away this morning at age 53.
SCHANTZ was OM for VOX COMMUNICATIONS in PITTSFIELD, MA, including AC WNAW-A, Top 40/Adult WBEC, N/T WSBS-A/F and Oldies WUPE, where he was PD/afternoon host. STEW worked most of his radio career in Central NEW YORK, including Rock WPDH/POUGHKEEPSIE back in the '70s. He is perhaps best remembered as PD/afternoon jock for (then BEACON, now PAMAL) Top 40 WSPK (K104)/POUGHKEEPSIE, a position he held from 1980-1998.
Following his departure from WSPK, he joined the (then CLEAR CHANNEL, now ROSER) cluster in UTICA, first as PD/afternoon host for Top 40 WSKS, eventually adding OM duties for WSKS as well as sister stations WUMX, WOUR, WCUL. He left in 2005, for the PD position at GALAXY Rocker WRCZ/ALBANY and sister Classic Rock WRCK/UTICA, where he stayed until joining VOX in 2007.
VOX VP/Market Manager PETER BERRY told ALL ACCESS, "STEW was a big man with an even bigger heart. He had a warm and caring way about him that came through to his listeners and everyone who worked with him. He had tremendous passion for the business which never wavered, even in the most challenging of times. His passing is truly a loss to the industry and all of us who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
