BET Awards Features Controversial Chris Brown Moment
June 28, 2010 at 5:16 AM (PT)
Last night's BET Awards featured a tribute to MICHAEL JACKSON that ended with CHRIS BROWN breaking down in tears. BROWN, who was involved in an assault on pop star -- and his then girlfriend -- RHIANNA last year (NET NEWS 6/22/2009), donned the famed MICHAEL JACKSON glove and fedora as he moonwalked to hit songs such as "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal."
It was the first public appearance in some time for BROWN, who pleaded guilty last AUGUST and sentenced to five years probation and six months of community labor (NET NEWS 8/26/2009) for the RHIANNA event.
During his performance at the BET AWARDS last night (6/27), he wept as he sang "Man in the Mirror."
Genuine Or Planned?
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES writes this morning, "When CHRIS BROWN appeared to fall apart while attempting to perform MICHAEL JACKSON's 'Man in the Mirror' at the BET AWARDS, some observers wondered: Was BROWN overcome with genuine grief for the loss of JACKSON or was he staging a play for sympathy in the hope of being forgiven for beating up RHIANNA?
After describing what CHRIS BROWN did at the BET AWARDS, MTV.COM solicited comments from readers. Quite a few posters wondered if he was play-acting. A poster named KELLI asked, 'Was it for real, or was he trying to get attention for being softer? I'm sure he feels bad about MICHAEL's death, but is he just trying to get away from the bad boy image with the crying thing?'"
KANYE WEST and T.I., among others, also performed at the SHRINE AUDITORIUM in LOS ANGELES.
