Jimmy Wayne Completes 'Meet Me Halfway' Walk With Broken Foot
August 2, 2010 at 7:36 AM (PT)
A broken foot didn't stop VALORY MUSIC CO. artist JIMMY WAYNE from crossing the finish line YESTERDAY (8/1) in PHOENIX, AZ as he finished his “Meet Me Halfway” 1700 mile walk to raise awareness for homeless teens. The walk completed the1,700-mile journey he began on JANUARY 1st of this year in NASHVILLE. Some 1650 miles into the walk WAYNE hurt his foot when coming down the mountainside near MESA. Even though the pain was intense he continued walking another 40 miles until he was forced to seek a doctor’s opinion. With a diagnosed broken heel and a sturdy airboot, he was able to complete the just over five miles to the PHOENIX city line.
JIMMY arrived at his destination, HOMEBASE YOUTH SERVICES, at 9:11a (PT) YESTERDAY (8/1) and just as he departed the MONROE-HARDING HOME in NASHVILLE, he finished it walking arm in arm with supporters. Hundreds of well wishers came out for the event as well as an area high school marching band. WAYNE celebrated that night by performing a free show for supporters at TOBY KEITH’S I LOVE THIS BAR AND GRILL in MESA.
WAYNE closed the weekend of festivities with a private concert at the HARD ROCK in PHOENIX for about 160 teens and young adults in either the foster care system or an organization like HOMEBASE. The show was an intimate acoustic performance where WAYNE shared his own story and songs based on his experiences. While there, the HARD ROCK acquired a pair of the shoes WAYNE wore on the 1700-mile trek, which will become part of the organization’s rock and roll collection and displays.
JIMMY said: “This has been one of the most challenging, and at the same time rewarding experiences of my life. I know that might sound strange, but it’s true. This journey has made me think back on the childhood I had – there were many nights I didn’t know where I would sleep, and had no idea if I’d have any food. Even today, there are kids out there facing the same problems—nowhere to go, no one to care for them. It’s just amazing that in this country child homelessness and hunger are still issues. If this walk has helped even one child find a permanent home with a caring family, it’s been worth every step. And if me doing it all over again would help another, I’m ready.”
