CALIFORNIA gubernatorial candidate and former eBAY CEO MEG WHITMAN entered the lions' den again by appearing in studio with CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A/LOS ANGELES afternoon hosts JOHN KOBYLT and KEN CHIAMPOU this afternoon.
JOHN AND KEN have been among WHITMAN's harshest critics in the media, calling her "NUTMEG" and seizing on WHITMAN's apparent conflicting messages regarding illegal immigration (talking tough in the English-language media while playing up her opposition to ARIZONA's SB 1070 and CALIFORNIA's Proposition 187 on Spanish-language billboards). On TODAY's commercial-free half-hour segment, KOBYLT and CHIAMPOU went right after WHITMAN's inconsistencies, playing back Spanish-language radio commercials and appearances on other talk shows that appeared to conflict with each other, with WHITMAN responding that she has consistently opposed the ARIZONA law and that the context of her comments on the English-language show involved states' rights to do what they want. The hosts and WHITMAN vigorously debated over the ARIZONA law's provision, WHITMAN's "three-point plan" on immigration, the "E-verify" procedure for verifying immigration status of employees, amnesty, the "guest worker" program, and other issues.
The show has been asking WHITMAN to come on the air and answer the accusations for several weeks, and WHITMAN's campaign finally agreed to the appearance for TODAY's show. WHITMAN has previously appeared on JOHN AND KEN's show, as has her opponent, state Attorney General and former Governor JERRY BROWN.
