CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WHAS-A/LOUISVILLE midday host MANDY CONNELL has apologized for using the term "half-breed" to describe President OBAMA on WEDNESDAY's show. The LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL reports that CONNELL said that she was "embarrassed and shocked that it came out of my mouth, and I sort of stumbled when I said it. I don't know why I said that. It's not a word I use on any occasion, ever." She noted that the comment was part of an attempt to compliment the President, whose father was black and whose mother is white.
"AMERICA has allowed poor people like OPRAH WINFREY to come from nothing and create a billion-dollar media enterprise," she said on the air. "At the same time it has allowed a young half-breed man -- and I say half-breed not in a derogatory way, it was just the first thing I thought of -- to become president."
The comment drew about 50 complaints, predominantly from people who did not hear the comment but were prompted by a call to action by a local rights group; Dir./Operations KELLY CARLS told the COURIER-JOURNAL that CONNELL's apology was sincere and that the host will not face any discipline for the incident.
