Providence Mayor Refuses To Debate Congressional Primary Opponents On WPRO
August 18, 2010 at 4:25 AM (PT)
PROVIDENCE Mayor DAVID N. CICILLINE has decided not to participate in a debate with his Congressional primary opponents scheduled for TODAY on CITADEL Talk WPRO-A/WEAN (NEWS TALK 630 WPRO AND 99.7 FM)/PROVIDENCE, citing the debate's airing during former Mayor BUDDY CIANCI's show as his reason for declining. The debate is scheduled for 5-6p (ET), part of CIANCI's time slot, but CIANCI is not involved in the debate and his show will end beforehand.
CICILLINE's Democratic primary opponents wasted no time in challenging the Mayor on his decision, with candidate ANTHONY GEMMA asking "What is DAVID CICILLINE afraid of?" and adding, "By running and hiding, and by concocting a ludicrous excuse for doing so, DAVID CICILLINE is showing contempt for democracy and for all of us. Enough is enough. Is such a man fit to serve in the Congress of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?" WILLIAM J. LYNCH, the former RHODE ISLAND Democratic Party Chairman, also called for CICILLINE to join the debate.
WPRO is holding debates for various local and state races in the 5-6p time slot all week.
