A controversy has cropped up involving a diversity group at INDIANA UNIVERSITY-PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANAPOLIS (IUPUI) and the refusal by an INDIANAPOLIS bakery to take an order placed by the group, who wanted rainbow-colored cupcakes for an event planned on NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY, OCTOBER 11th.
According to one report, the husband of the bakery owner stated he felt it best to not take the order, fearing it would send the wrong message to their two children. Earlier, the wife had claimed the company didn't make cupcakes, then later changed her story to say they didn't have sufficient materials to make the rainbow colors.
TIM "RAYNE" RAINEY, PD for RADIO ONE Top 40 WNOU (RADIO NOW)/INDIANAPOLIS caught wind of the story and after talking about it with his morning host SCOTTY DAVIS, the two decided to take some action.
Announced via FACEBOOK last FRIDAY (9/24), THE SCOTTY SHOW said it would host the 1st annual GAY CUPCAKE PARTY on OCTOBER 1st. By WEDNESDAY (9/29), nearly 400 people had indicated that they planned to attend the event.
RAYNE told ALL ACCESS "It's a shame that something like this is happening. Our station represents the entire community, and that includes the LGBT community. We wanted to get involved and bring attention to this matter."
