A FRESNO COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY protest vigil outside the studios of PEAK BROADCASTING Talk KMJ-A and Talk KMJ-F (THE FM KMJ)/FRESNO TUESDAY evening drew dozens of protestors and about 20 supporters of the stations, reports the FRESNO BEE.
The protestors, reacting to the TUCSON shootings, targeted the stations and conservative Talk radio for fostering a "climate of hate" that they consider responsible for the shooting. The supporters noted that the shooter has not been shown to have been influenced by Talk radio and appears to be mentally ill, and voiced their support of free speech.
KMJ VP/GM PATTY HIXSON issued a statement denouncing the violence in TUCSON and adding that the station "cannot however, allow the FRESNO DEMOCRATIC PARTY, or anyone else, to blame, connect, or characterize KMJ RADIO for the act of a deranged individual, who has no connection to any political party, the CENTRAL VALLEY, or KMJ. The irresponsible actions of the FRESNO DEMOCRATIC PARTY’s attempt to characterize KMJ’s programming as 'full of vitriolic rhetoric' and 'violent imagery' directed against government and government officials' is irresponsible, inaccurate, and an insult to our staff and the listeners we serve throughout central CALIFORNIA 24 hours a day ... We do not come to work to spew hate, or hate language, and i resent anyone who suggests we do."
"KMJ is a true reflection of the community we serve," wrote HIXSON. "To suggest we are the instigators of hate is to suggest our listeners are, too! Obviously, we reject this unfair, simplistic assumption as nothing more than irresponsible rhetoric."
