3AW/Melbourne News Anchor Hiccups Through Report
March 3, 2011 at 4:50 AM (PT)
FAIRFAX MEDIA Talk 3AW/MELBOURNE news anchor KATE WILSON experienced a radio nightmare early THURSDAY morning when she was hit by an attack of the hiccups just as her 3a newscast began. WILSON, alone in the newsroom and with no time to rush to get water from the kitchen, had no choice but to soldier on with the report, hiccuping throughout.
"I’m sitting there, I’m swallowing, I’m trying to just get rid of them in any way I can," said WILSON. "And I just took a deep breath and went: Right, I’m just going to have to do it. There’s no one else that can do it."
"There’s nothing you can do about it," she added. "We all have things happen to us and it’s just that, with a newsreader, obviously it’s going to have an impact. If you’ve got a cold your voice will drop. And if you get the hiccups, well. They arrived at the worst time.... Most people have just said 'Well done on maintaining your composure and being a trouper.' No one has said anything bad, which is a good thing."
