FCC Opens Docket On Proposed Sale Of WMFE-TV/Orlando

The FCC has docketed COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS, INC.'s proposed sale of PBS affiliate WMFE-TV/ORLANDO to religious operator DAYSTAR's COMMUNITY EDUCATORS OF ORLANDO, INC. and will accept petitions to deny the sale no later than MAY 6th. The sale is being labeled Media Bureau Docket No. 11-75.
WMFE's deal, with the company saying that it would prefer to jettison the TV station and concentrate on its noncommercial NPR affilate WMFE-F/ORLANDO, is highly controversial in CENTRAL FLORIDA, since the transfer would eliminate the ORLANDO-DAYTONA BEACH-COCOA market's primary PBS affiliate. DAYTONA STATE COLLEGE's secondary PBS affiliate, WDSC-TV/NEW SMYRNA BEACH, recently told the DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL that it is not planning to take on additional primary PBS programming without knowing about federal and state funding. Another option for primary PBS carriage is secondary affiliate WBCC-TV/COCOA, owned by BREVARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
