The Urban Format Will Return To Pittsburgh

In the SPRING of 2009 (NET NEWS 5/15/2009), SHERIDAN BROADCASTING CORP. agreed to sell Urban WAMO-FM, Urban AC WAMO-A and Black Gospel WPGR-A /PITTSBURGH to ST. JOSEPH MISSIONS for $8.9 million. Since the flip to religion, PITTSBURGH has been without a full-time Urban radio station -- but that's about to change, reports THE PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE.
When RADIO POWER INC. closes om WPYT-A this week, the new owner will launch an Urban format. A JUNE launch is expected.
The new owners are the same group that launched 94.3 THE BONE, DETROIT'S NEW ROCK STATION just last month (NET NEWS 4/21), led by MARTZ COMMUNICATIONS CEO TIM MARTZ.
"When you go into a market with a station, you look at who's doing what," MARTZ told the POST-GAZETTE. "WAMO had a big audience. Nobody has filled the void. It's an attractive format."
"The new WPYT's reach will be extended by broadcasting on an FM translator located at 100.1. WPYT-A is a daytime-only signal. The FM frequency will broadcast 24 hours a day.
