New York Sportscaster Comes Out On The Air
May 19, 2011 at 2:20 PM (PT)
ESPN Sports WEPN-A (1050 ESPN)/NEW YORK 5-6a (ET) host JARED MAX, recently arrived from crosstown CBS RADIO News WCBS-A, took the occasion of recent disclosures that two basketball figures are gay to come out himself.
The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reports that MAX, discussing the public pronouncements of PHOENIX SUNS President RICK WELTS and former VILLANOVA player WILL SHERIDAN, said, "Are we ready to have our sports information delivered by someone who is gay? We're going to find out. Because for the last 16 years I've been living a free life among all my close friends and family. But I've been living behind what is a gargantuan-sized secret in the sports world. I am gay. Yeah, JARED MAX, the sports guy with one of the most familiar voices in NEW YORK sports, isn't quite like the majority."
He said that the revelation would be the only time the subject would come up on the show and talked about how, during college, he feared his sexuality would be a roadblock to a career in sportscasting.
