The Urban Format Returns To Pittsburgh Over The Weekend
May 23, 2011 at 3:48 AM (PT)
As first tipped in ALL ACCESS (NET NEWS 5/16) TIM MARTZ headed RADIO POWER INC. has returned the Urban format to PITTSBURGH with WPYT-A (660)/WILKINSBURG, PA. They're also operating on FM with a 99 watt, low-power FM translator at 100.1 (W261AX 100.1).
The station signed on commercial-free and jockless SUNDAY afternoon playing nothing but hip-hop and R&B jams. They are referring to themselves as "The new WAMO." WAMO were the call etters of PITTSBURGH's only Urban station before it was sold by SHERIDAN BROADCASTING to ST. JOSEPH MISSIONS back in 2009 (NET NEWS 5/15/2009). They immediately changed the format to Catholic programming.
WPYT is currently running sweepers, many of which refer to themselves as "PITTSBURGH's new home for hip-hop and R&B." They are stunting with 10,000 songs in-a-row and taking aim at crosstown CLEAR CHANNEL Top-40 WKST(96.1 KISS) which has been "leaning Urban" at night. Our sources say the station may be trying to pick up the old WAMO call-letters.
