It's a battle over radio automation, as MISSION ABSTRACT DATA has filed a complaint in U.S. District Court for the District of DELAWARE alleging patent infringement by numerous radio groups, including CBS RADIO, CUMULUS, COX RADIO, ENTERCOM, BEASLEY BROADCASTING, GREATER MEDIA and TOWNSQUARE MEDIA. The lawsuit names nearly 900 individual stations.
RADIO WORLD reports, "The plaintiff claims it holds two U.S. patents that relate to a method and system for operating radio stations in which a digital database stores music that is programmed, played and broadcast."
Broadcasters immediately rejected the basis of the claim. COX RADIO wrote it, "denies each and every allegation of the complaint." Other broadcasters replied in similar fashion. Court documents show CBS, CUMULUS, ENTERCOM, COX, BEASLEY and TOWNSQUARE MEDIA also filed counterclaims against MISSION ABSTRACT DATA.
