Overnight Duo On Dutch Station Help Prevent A Suicide
June 8, 2011 at 6:24 AM (PT)
Last night, MARTIJN MUIJS and KIMBERLY VAN DER BERKT of Dutch Top 40 station RADIO 538 received a phone-call during their overnight show from a listener, who started to talk about all her problems (bad relationship, a little daughter with down-syndrome) and the fact she wanted to commit suicide after she was done talking to them.
MARTIJN and KIMBERLY dropped everything and talked for over 30 minutes, working to convince the listener not to commit suicide, while the producer informed the police. Luckily the police managed to trace the address and could get to the listener before she hung up.
LEX "THE DUTCH GUY" told ALL ACCESS, "Although MARTIJN and KIMBERLY don't see themselves as heroes, the fact is that they remain calm and managed to keep the listener on the phone before something bad happened. This event clearly shows that (local) live talent CAN make a difference in somebody's life, no matter what country. This is what radio is all about. A true connection between personality and listener and powerful enough to prevent a tragedy."
