TALKERS magazine's NEW MEDIA SEMINAR returned to the CONCIERGE CONFERENCE CENTER in NEW YORK FRIDAY and SATURDAY for another year, with a series of panels and presentations exploring talk radio's present and future.
The conference, organized by TALKERS founder MICHAEL HARRISON, added a section on Sports Talk radio this year, featuring a presentation of practical advice from voiceover specialist JIM CUTLER, a talk by ENTERCOM BOSTON VP/Market Manager JULIE KAHN on the success of WEEI-A/BOSTON, and panels with programmers (moderated by consultant RICK SCOTT and including CBS RADIO's TOM BIGBY, CBS Sports KDKA-F (93.7 THE FAN)/PITTSBURGH PD TERRY FOXX, ESPN RADIO's SCOTT MARSTELLER, and WEEI's JASON WOLFE) and talent (an outspoken BCA Sports XEPRS-A (XX 1090)/SAN DIEGO morning co-host SCOTT KAPLAN, ESPN Sports WEPN-A (1050 ESPN)/NEW YORK's new middayers RYAN RUOCCO and ROBIN LUNDBERG, crosstown CBS Sports WFAN-A middayer JOE BENIGNO, and "AMERICA TONIGHT" host KATE DELANEY, a last-minute pinch-hitter).
Controversial host ALEX JONES gave a keynote address that was supposed to focus on his use of new media and alternative methods of reaching an audience, but was instead largely composed of his conspiracy theories and warnings to Talk radio to resist the plans of government and the world's richest and most powerful families. Consultants HOLLAND COOKE and WALTER SABO gave presentations on, respectively, communication skills for the new era and how talk radio is, contrary to some analyses, a format suited to PPM measurement. DIAL GLOBAL's NEAL BOORTZ gave the "Annual State of the First Amendment Address," while FOX NEWS CHANNEL's JUAN WILLIAMS received the annual Freedom of Speech Award; WOR RADIO NETWORK's Dr. JOY BROWNE received the Humanitarian of the Year award, and DIAL GLOBAL's STEPHANIE MILLER was named "Woman of the Year."
Additional panels included monetizing new media and non-traditional revenue sources, managing controversial Talk radio (with SALEM Talk WNYM-A (AM 970 THE APPLE)/NEW YORK PD PETER THIELE and JAMES CRYSTAL RADIO Talk WFTL-A/FORT LAUDERDALE-WEST PALM BEACH host JOYCE KAUFMAN recounting stories about their own experiences in crisis management), and program directors' and talent's perspectives on the state of the format.
