RADIO ONE stations reacted swiftly and with compassion to the tragedy at the INDIANA STATE FAIR. Top 40 WNOU (RADIO NOW)/INDIANAPOLIS PD RAYNE happened to find himself in the thick of it.
"SATURDAY (8/13) started out on a high note," he recalled, "when NAUGHTY BY NATURE tore it up at the annual BROAD RIPPLE BLOCK PARTY, which helps raise money for RILEY HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN. Then came news of the stage collapse at the STATE FAIR. Both WNOU and our sister WHHH (HOT 96.3) kept listeners up to date, airing live reports from people who were at the fairgrounds."
On SUNDAY, both stations presented LIL’ WAYNE at the SO LONG SUMMER JAM 2, and RAYNE told ALL ACCESS, "We used that opportunity to hand out white ribbons in memory of the STATE FAIR victims. We also had concertgoers sign over-sized cards with their thoughts and prayers."
On MONDAY (8/15), WNOU and WHHH pulled all contesting as the KYLE & RACHEL morning show took calls, reflecting on STATE FAIR tragedy. In the afternoon, all RADIO ONE INDIANA stations simulcast the memorial service. TUESDAY (8/16), RAYNE, along with staffers MIKEY V and REKA, were stationed at major intersections, handing out white ribbons to commuters. The White Ribbon page is here.
"Never have I seen a community come together like this," RAYNE said. "Hoosiers are some of the kindest, most gracious people and as we come together as a community, our bond grows stronger. RADIO ONE sends our thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this tragedy. Production Dir. ED MONTGOMERY put together a special montage of news clips to the song "If I Die Young" by THE BAND PERRY." You can hear that here.
