BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Starting out behind the scenes at a Chicago morning show gave me the radio bug, and just like Mad Cow disease, I haven't been able to get it out of my system! I've bounced through the cornfields of Iowa and Wisconsin before making my way out to Philadelphia and tax-free Delaware for the past 10 years. Mornings, afternoons, production, music ... other than actually BUILDING a radio station, if it's a job in radio, I've probably done it.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I have been able to surround myself with a bunch of friends who have so many problems in THEIR lives, it makes my little "unemployment" issue seem not so bad!
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Everyday for five weeks now, I've been doing the "Insanity" workout, you've probably seen offered on late-night infomercials. So far, I've lost 10 pounds! (Which either means this really works, or ... I was just a big fat slob)
3) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Absolutely! My parents want me to work in a different field and my uncle wants me to go back to school, but they don't understand that RADIO IS WHAT I LOVE!
4) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
This amazing website called ALLACCESS.COM! (Hope that gets me some brownie points.)
5) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
"Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
6) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
I NEVER listened to the radio before, probably because I HAD to listen to my station nine hours a day. Now that I'm free to do what I want, I DO listen ... and like it!
7) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
The one positive thing about being "on the beach" is having TIME to spend with friends and family, except ... not having the MONEY to actually hang out with them. I accept A LOT of free drinks, though! Thanks guys!
8) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Playing poker with Boyz II Men and celebrity boxing (I lost, but went the distance!). My fight even made Sports Illustrated! I believe the quote was, "Former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema defeated a local radio DJ."
9) If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money, would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in the biz?
I can say with utmost confidence that it probably violates all U.S. labor laws to pay anyone less than I was making.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Despite what you may have heard about the demise of radio, it has a very bright future, as does anyone who is willing to commit themselves to their craft with unbridled passion.
Bonus Questions
Any books you can recommend to people who need something inspirational to read?
"Fargo Rock City" by Chuck Klosterman. It's basically 300 pages of a kid growing up in the middle of nowhere, listening to Poison and Motley Crue. How do YOU know it's good? It's the first book I've read in 14 years!
