July 31, 2015Unplugged ... Making It Real
Nashville has a wonderful new place to play music ... Eric Church unplugged christened it on a perfect weather evening this week. Great place to hear music under the stars with even the mosquitos taking the night off.
Eric, like most artists, were all originally unplugged. Hard to find artists who didn't start small and work up to having a band. Dierks and Kenny come to mind, when you think of young new kids in town going downtown and playing for tips. "Gonna Buy Me a Boat" singer Chris Janson sure started that way on Lower Broadway Nashville, even sleeping in his car nearby at night. That acoustic guitar was your meal ticket. Eric has rediscovered the appeal and simplicity of that kind of performance.
Nashville is on some kind of viral roll. The politicians put into gear a series of events and building programs that arrived at the right time. The right time was the TV show, Nashville, and the return of Country music as the hottest genre of music. Again you have to credit Taylor Swift with a big part of plugging Nashville, as she began her acoustic guitar-led career path. Taylor and Nashville and the new buildings like the Music City Center and now the "Ascend" are adding to an already great list of places to play. From the legendary Station Inn, Tootsies and Bluebird Café ... to TPAC, The Wild Horse and of course, the Ryman and Opry House.
July 24, 2015The First Couple Of Country Go Down In Flames
There isn't much to say that hasn't been screamed this week on the Shelton/Lambert divorce. It was a huge story for the entertainment pages of newspapers, the Internet and television. They were the Ken and Barbie of Country and the fans loved them as a couple. They will ...
July 17, 2015No One Cares!
How many times do I hear that a week? No one cares what people over 40 think! No one cares about how the streaming or digital songs sound! No one cares about serious issues like terrorism and immigration! No one cares! That really sucks and at one point do people start ...
July 10, 2015Like Watching Ballet

June 19, 2015Surviving June In Nashville
OMG! It is hot here ... FAN FAIR is a broil bath every year and the CMA Fest is too ... Can we stop frying the fans now? The chorus needs to build that sends the festival back inside during the day as it was in 1972 when it began at the Municipal Auditorium. The ...
June 12, 2015Platinum In The Pipeline
The seven days of the CMA are exhausting for everyone involved. The sheer number of performers is hard to wrap your logistics around: 500 performances! Yes! The baby Country act parade is in full drive. Yes, there are some very promising young people trying to break out ...
June 5, 2015The Late Fan Fair Still Remembered
Just got off a plane in LA from Hawaii ... already in fear of the hardest week in Country music for the on-scene fans and those covering them... Who are these fans, I ask myself thinking of future stories? The ones met in the early '80s were mostly women probably ...
May 29, 2015This Column Will Feature No Tomato Analogies
Jimmy Carter at LAX On vacation, but even 2,000 miles from Nashville I felt the great "Tomato" explosion. It was a case of an analogy intended for clarity that came off really bad. In case you have been on a deeper vacation and unplugged, a radio music scheduling/radio ...
