“Fast Talk” is the new track from the Los Angeles-based songwriter-producer Dexter Tortoriello better known as his moniker, Houses. It is a spellbinding yet morbid cut featuring the hypnotic vocals of longtime member Megan Messina. It's was the first preview of Houses' new “Drugstore Heaven” EP, which arrived on September 28th on Downtown Records.
While the song at first sounds sweet and buttery, it's actually a "memorial" to a group of friends Tortoriello had in his life in his late teens. "Thematically, it’s almost like a ballet where you keep driving around the same blocks," he says. "And people start disappearing from the car because they’re going to jail or dying."
When asked about the music video for “Fast Talk,” Dexter explains,“I’ve been having a lot of fun working with Josh Vanover on all the graphic artwork for Drugstore Heaven. We’ve never actually spoken directly – I just periodically send folders of personal photographs and clippings from magazines I collect and he’s able to orchestrate them into something much more beautiful and alive. This video captures the spirit of the song in an abstract way that feels like it’s straight from my subconscious. Like I can finally show other people what’s inside my head.”
This new music comes five years after the release of Houses' album “A Quiet Darkness,” but Tortoriello has been plenty busy, working on his producer project Dawn Golden and co-writing and producing for the likes of Lil Yachty, Kali Uchis, Ryan Hemsworth and Martin Garrix, among others.
Houses recently announced a 2019 North American tour supporting Jungle, including shows at L.A.’s Palladium on March 1st and NYC’s Terminal 5 on March 19th.
