Hugo
Nov 8, 2010
Hugo is in the media spotlight both nationally and internationally. He'll soon be coming out with his first solo English-language album, "Old Tyme Religion", which is scheduled for a 2011 Spring release under rap mogul Jay-Z's Roc Nation label.
"Old Tyme Religion" features 12 songs including "99 Problems", which is the first single, "Bread & Butter", "Born", "Mekong Delta" and "Wake Alone". The sound is evocative of the music of the '60s and '70s, ranging from pop and rock through blues and country to folk, all with a heavy dose of modern attitude. Dave McCracken, sound engineer for Depeche Mode and Ian Brown, is producers.
The single, "99 Problems" is a bluegrass and banjo version of the rap mogul's hit. "Jay-Z's original is about the Black people in America who have been subjected to endless bullying and humiliation. My song is about the management of my life. It's like looking into my soul," says Hugo. "But to answer your question, he wasn't involved at all really, he just trusted me and the producer."
"I think the album will appeal to a variety of people. "It's a good sign that my song 'Bread & Butter' is used for the TV program 'Entourage'," he said. "I'm trying to make rock and roll in the age of hip-hop. A complete thought in three minutes and 30 seconds, that's the challenge. A song is a planet with gravity and atmosphere and things living in it. An album is a solar system," says Hugo.
British-born, Thailand-raised, Hugo, hits the road this fall with Irish-trio The Script and the UK's One eskimO. Hugo will support The Script on the first half of their headlining US tour and then join One eskimO for the final leg of their fall tour.
"I am excited and grateful to be able to tour the states with great bands, its all I've ever wanted to do, says Hugo. I don't see myself as alternative or indie or anything like that at all. I consider myself to be making mainstream music. That's what I want to do, play for people that like the material."
"99 Problems" impacts Alternative on November 9th.
