Nothing But Thieves
Jun 21, 2023
Southend, UK quintet Nothing But Thieves are out with their new single "Overcome" from their upcoming fourth album, Dead Club City, out June 30th via Sony Music/AWAL.
"'Overcome’ has always felt like a 'throw your stuff in a bag and get away' song," shared the band. "Dead Club City (the city) would definitely feel enticing for someone like that. We're all battling something, so having a song on the album that would describe why someone would want change felt right."
Backed by an anthemic melody and 80s synths, “Overcome” builds to an uplifting and euphoric chorus that captures the mood of the album and echoes the feelings of escapism, hope, and new beginnings. The music video, directed by Teeeezy C (Central Cee, Unknown T), gives another visual glimpse into Dead Club City and portrays a couple’s own escapist story within the city, set against a backdrop of a live performance by the band.
With socially insightful lyrics and an adept ability to progress their sound and experiment between the diverse genres that shape them as a band, Nothing But Thieves are making a statement return, marking an innovative new chapter with Dead Club City. The five-piece first introduced this new era with the March release of “Welcome To The DCC,” the opening track off the new concept album. The confident and punchy song not only signals the band’s more sonically leftfield sound, but also advertises the world of DCC, otherwise known as Dead Club City, and the songs and ideas to come. A rock song, but with an experimental funk edge and 80’s influences, the track builds through the opening tension, breaking to upbeat synths and a huge soaring chorus.
On the 11-track album, Nothing But Thieves showcase their city-sized, members-only club, Dead Club City. The album’s tracklist and overall narrative is formed by different characters and story arcs from in and around the city. Using the club as a focal point, it is easy to imagine the real-world meaning behind Dead Club City. Themes such as advertisement, unity, internet culture, the music industry, ageing and politics, as well as escapism and change are highlighted by the alienation or privilege of a members only club. Recorded and self-produced by NBT guitarist Dominic Craik, the songs on Dead Club City are vividly alive with big ideas, pop hooks, soul flourishes, hip hop beats, crunchy riffs, and lead vocalist Conor Mason’s remarkable and slinky falsetto.
Over the past decade, Nothing But Thieves – Conor Mason (vocals, guitar), Joe Langridge-Brown (guitars), Dominic Craik (guitars, keyboard), Philip Blake (bass), and James Price (drums) – has built a loyal and wide following amassing over 1.2 million worldwide album sales, 2 billion worldwide streams, and 300 million video views in addition to multiple gold and platinum records around the world. The band first debuted in 2015 with their self-titled album Nothing But Thieves, featuring their #1 U.S. Alternative radio single "Trip Switch." The band has also released Broken Machine in 2017, What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way (EP) in 2018), and their third album, Moral Panic (2020), which charted at #3, accrued over 320 million streams, and earned the band the Best Indie Act at Global Radio’s 2021 Awards.
Nothing But Thieves released Moral Panic II in 2021 with both projects forming Moral Panic (The Complete Edition) and toured the new music throughout 2021 and 2022 with headline shows and festival dates in both the UK and Europe, including their biggest ever London headline show at O2 Arena and a 17,000-headlining show at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome, alongside a live support slot with The Rolling Stones in Lyon. Stateside, Nothing But Thieves has performed at such marquee festivals as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and BottleRock.
In September, Nothing But Thieves will play Louder Than Life and Aftershock festivals during their North American Welcome To The DCC World Tour beginning September 12th in Washington DC.
