Motion City Soundtrack
Jan 18, 2010
After playing three different albums on three different nights last month, Motion City Soundtrack has no fear of playing old material live.
"I think doing this really kind of helped us and made us realize it's not as hard as we think to dig up old songs and play whatever whenever we feel like playing it," bassist/pianist Matt Taylor told LiveDaily. "It was probably the most fun I've ever had in this band. We had a really good time."
So on its "My Dinosaur Life" tour, which begins Janurary 23rd, expect Motion City Soundtrack to dive deep in the catalog.
"I'm sure we will now," Taylor said. "We'll mix it up and make it more interesting each night. You kind of get in a routine where you play songs you're comfortable playing. But the December shows were really, really, really fun for all of us. We were surprised we did it. We were really scared. Afterward, we were like, 'We did it!'"
The upcoming "My Dinosaur Life" jaunt is named after Motion City Soundtrack's forthcoming album due in stores January 19th via Columbia Records. Taylor said he is "excited for fans to hear it".
"We worked with Mark again, Mark Hoppus [of Blink-182]," Taylor said. "We don't usually sit down and say, 'We want to make an album or a song that sounds like this.' We don't have a specific goal in mind. [Our 2007 album] 'Even if it Kills Me' was a little softer, a little slower tempos, a little more pretty. This time, we just wanted to come back out. We wanted a rocking-sounding record. We wanted really big guitars and approach it so it wasn't so polished sounding and perfect sounding. I think it came out that way."
Hoppus, who also produced 2005's "Commit This To Memory," had a lot to do with the sound on "My Dinosaur Life," Taylor said.
"He [Hoppus] was down with the idea from the beginning," Taylor said. "We let him know that that's what we wanted to do. So that was always on everyone's mind, to get the right guitar sound for the right song--and make it big."
The album was delayed slightly when drummer Tony Thaxton broke his arm on New Year's Day 2009. When it didn't heal correctly, that made Motion City Soundtrack rethink the recording process.
"We had to stop and figure out a plan. Unfortunately, we had to push everything back, the release, everything", said Taylor.
"Of course we had to have Tony record drums last because his arm wasn't healed yet. It was very bizarre for us to do. Everybody gets their parts down and then he can play off of us, rather than us playing off of what he's got. It was different. It turned out well."
'Her Words Destroyed My Planet' impacts Alternative on January 26th. The single is about, a traumatizing break-up, specifically frontman Justin Pierre had with his ex-girlfriend.
