Jillette Johnson
Apr 7, 2014
For New York-based Jillette Johnson, her debut album, Water In A Whale, is the culmination of 11 years of work. The 24 year-old singer has been deeply involved with music since she was 12, honing her craft as a songwriter and pianist. With the production skills of Peter Zizzo (Vanessa Carlton, Avril Lavigne) and Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, David Byrne), this collection through Wind-Up Records is sure to be a success. Water In A Whale opens with the lead single, an explosive and powerful track, "Torpedo,"
Jillette explains that the song is about resilience. "I wrote it about my relationship with my career and my unwillingness to give up on my dream. I've been writing and playing music for whoever would listen since I was a little kid, and with that has come a lot of rejection and heartache. 'Torpedo' is about absorbing those blows to my ego and then bouncing right back up to fight."
Jillette started playing live venues in NYC at the age of 12. She went on to audition for The Voice but turned down the offer to appear on the show so she could focus all of her effort toward her career and her music. Jillette released her debut EP, Whiskey & Frosting, in 2012 and it contains five tracks that were written by Jillette in her apartment over the previous year, and she claims that the track "When The Ship Goes Down" is the best track she has ever written.
