Six Ways To Make Your Social Media Content Less Polished
May 10, 2022
-
I said it nearly two years ago – and it remains steady and strong:
Unpolished is the new Polished
It’s a trend I saw come out of the 2020 lockdown. We were becoming raw – less made up.
And just this week – Meta is urging brands to look and feel more genuine, citing two studies as proof.
One study is Instagram’s own data that found content shot on mobile devices with “a more lo-fi, language of the platform” feel outperformed polished content.
The other study from YPulse found that 8 in 10 young consumers agreed with the statement, “I like it when content from brands is not perfect,” and “tired of seeing perfect images in advertising.”
So, how do you get started?
Six Meta Tips For Social Media Imperfection - Putting real people (unpolished talent, fans, everyday folks) center stage gives your content relatability.
- Using the language of the platform, the culture code (content form and style most consumed), drives credibility.
- Harnessing the power of creators (talent) establishes trust. People care what a creator says about a brand more than what the brand says about itself.
- Lifting the veil on gimmicks. Take us behind the scenes to be part of the process. The “how I did this” type videos are wildly successful.
- Don’t overdo it. Practice lo-fi editing techniques to feel human.
- Use humor to dissolve boundaries between brand and audience. Humor is a great leveler.
The key is to ensure what you create is brand-aligned and when you post it’s consistent.
I can’t stress enough how important consistency is.
